One thing to remember when choosing fantasy
or creative children's furniture: don't forget room for storage! The
most inspirational castle bed or tree fort hideout will become mom's
worst nightmare if there's no place to store toys and clothing.
Don't worry- it is possible to incorporate some wonderful storage
options into your kids' beds and room décor that are functional and
fantastic.
With the options available
in children's furniture today, a little girl's bedroom can be turned
into a fantasy playroom with barely more than the flick of a magic
wand. What little girl doesn't want to spend her nights dreaming
about knights, castles, fairies, and pixie dust? A great strategy
for a girl's room
decor is to choose a focal
point for the theme of the room, add some color, a few fun and
functional accessories, and your favorite little princess will have
the bedroom of her dreams!
Theme Beds as Focal
Points
The first step I recommend
in any design plan is to choose one item that will immediately draw
the eye and become the anchor for the rest of the decorating
project. For many people, this is the bed (since the purpose of the
room is to provide a place to rest).
Kids
beds can be as elaborate as a
theme beds like princess castle beds or maybe a princess
loft
bed. Or you could go with
more simple designs, such as white
sleigh
beds or old-fashioned
four-posters for your girl's room décor. Once this portion of the
room is chosen, the next step is to choose colors which will
complement
this main piece.
Selecting Color to
Complement Children's Furniture
When it comes to a girl's
room decor, color helps to define the overall feel of the space; it
can be fun, cozy, vibrant or any number of possibilities. Once
you've chosen the focal point for her room, you can then select
colors for the wall, floor, and trim that complement the theme bed
and the children's furniture you have chosen. For the princess look,
you may want to choose shades of pink and mauve. Gold tones may be
added as well, especially if a crown motif is chosen. For theme beds
with lots of color, you may want to choose something a bit more
neutral for the walls and floor.
Some people like to choose
one or two complementary colors and use various shades of these to
decorate a child's bedroom. If you're not sure how the colors you
(or your little princess) have selected will work together, a visit
to your local paint store is in order. You can pick up any number of
color chips and see how certain color combinations would look
together with your girl's room décor. (Be sure to look at the colors
under natural light though, as artificial light can alter your color
perception.)
Adding Accessories to Kids
Beds
Here's where the fun part
comes in: once you've chosen the bed, and added some color, it's
time to complete the look of the room by adding accessories. If the
theme bed is a relatively simple style, you could finish up the
girl's room decor by choosing a mesh net to add a canopy over the
bed.
Don't forget the bed linens,
which add color and texture to the look of the room. What princess
loft bed would be complete without a few throw pillows to mach the
overall décor? Choose fabrics with a furry or satiny finish to add
interest.
Other choices for
accessorizing the bedroom are mirrors, a bedside table, a lamp, or
an area rug. Why not add a decorative border or some stickers in the
shape of her favorite princess character to the walls along with the
children's furniture you have already chosen? Since theme beds
become the focal point of a room, it makes sense to choose it first
and add color and accessories afterward.
